from Tangents to Basics—Adventures of Our Motorcycling Escapades

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Well, I guess you could say we have been off on some tangents, but someone once told me that tangents are the art of soulful conversation. The once unthinkable can suddenly become possible as a new path to our dreams illuminates itself while in the throws of a tangent. I have had many life-changing discoveries while off on a tangent—those kind where you say to yourself “Oh my, I never thought of that!”—when it occurs to you seemingly out of nowhere a new, different way to do the very thing you have been processing and analyzing for weeks.

But in good harmony with life, everything must be balanced and so as much as we see value in tangents, we also see value in getting back to the basics. And so here we are—back to the basics of travel-blogging. Fully in the swing of motorcycle season, we find ourselves going all sorts of places on our motorcycles and we have lots to tell.

This past weekend, we rode to Dallas with a palette of things in store for us. This was our first long ride together, so it was a milestone in that regard. First, we toured the American IronHorse factory in Ft. Worth. It was really a spectacle to see motorcycles being made and all the different phases they go thru. Amazingly, they have found a way to systematize the process of manufacturing custom motorcycles. That sounds a lil contradictory, but we witnessed it right before our eyes. If you have never heard of American IronHorse, they make custom choppers (the motorcycles with the long rake on the front). You can check out their website at www.americanironhorse.com. All of their process is currently what you might call build-on-demand. If they don’t have an order for a bike, they aren’t building it! The funnest part was seeing them paint the tanks with these really crazy paint jobs! But the paint isn’t the only thing that makes IronHorses custom, they also make their ownseats and have 9 different wheel options coupled with 3 different engine options. Suffice it to say, for two people that are motorcycle enthusiasts, seeing how they are made was really a treat! Maybe one day, we will have ourselves one of those eye-catching beauties.

And I guess sometimes I get carried away and put the cart before the horse, Before we went and toured the IronHorse factory, we rode some choppers before we even left Midland. That was a first for both of us and it made the tour of the factory much more interesting, I suppose, because we could put what we were looking at in the context of having just ridden some. It was an interesting experience, because so many people. us included, thought they would be really hard to maneuver. They were certainly different, so at first it is seemingly difficult, but it was not any different than the adjustment you go thru with any new bike. We just had to learn how to ride them! Really, it was a sort of myth-dispelling experience.

So back to our trip….we also went to the Dallas Guitar Show, courtesy of our good friend, Mark Pollock. It was really wild to see so many guitars all in one place. As we strolled the isles, the sounds of plucked and strummed strings reverberated everywhere. Indoor music, outdoor music, just everything imaginable in the way of guitars. Even a clinic by famous guitar maker, Paul Reed Smith.

And still more….we also had occasion to visit the Easy Riders V-Twin Bike Show Tour. To sum it up in one word—WOW! It was really an amazing spectacle. I’ve attached a few pics of some of Rick Fairless’ custom builds because his are some of the most outlandish, but there were many many many bikes there that are probably worthy of posting.

So that’s it for this weekend, but isn’t that enough?!? We were exhausted by the time we got home, but every ounce of our exhaustion was well worth the journey. This coming weekend we are headed to Llano for the 1st annual Hawgs-n-Hills rally—on the motorcycles, of course! So we will have more to tell next week. Stay tuned……

Back to Our Roots

Friday, April 20th, 2007

We’re on the road and back to our roots! With motorcycle season now in full swing, we are taking full advantage. We should have lots to report from the road, so check back soon. If you just can’t wait, you can check out Ronn’s post at Beatnik Biker.

The latest news is I traded my 883 for more power and now I can keep up with the big dawgs. I got me a new 1200 Sporty (well, new to me!) and whew!, what a difference! So now we have Pokey and Miss Piggy. Pulchritude moved on to grace someone else with her beauty. I miss her already and it’s only been 4 days. :( But I already love Miss Piggy! Geez, the conflict!

Well, back to our roots, we are! After all, travel blogging was how Piglet Paper got birthed!

Shining Star of Texas

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

Traveling back from Alpine/Marfa/Marathon yesterday having delivered the April issue of Good Times, we came thru Ft. Stockton to eat lunch.  In the process, we found out about a rally coming up that didn’t make it into our March Rally/Reference Guide.

It is the 1st Annual Shining Star of Texas Rally on May 4, 5, & 6 in Ft. Stockton.   Looks like they are keeping things simple…no pre-reg, just show up if you want to go!

Sister Blogs

Monday, February 26th, 2007

You might have wondered why you haven’t heard from the Piglet Paper crew in a while or as often. And as faithful readers, we thought we would let you know why.

When we started Piglet Paper, our original intent was for it to be a place for our travel-logs while two-wheeling on the open road. But as you have experienced, Piglet Paper has become this sort of a hodge podge of different stuff, hence our new tag line: “an eclectic mix of motorcycling, media, mania and whatever suits our fancy”.

We both became so intrigued with blogging and all that entails, that we just posted anything and everything here on Piglet Paper. But then one day the bright idea struck us to start other blogs that were more suited for the kind of things we were posting. So we did!

Piglet Paper gave us the experience of figuring out what we liked to write about. As it turns out, Ronn likes to write about tips, tricks and gadgetry and Lisa likes to write philosophical, meandering analogies-the kind of things she thinks about. So it is only appropriate to introduce to you here Beatnik Biker and Life Wonderments. We are certain that no explanation is needed about which blog belongs to who.

Over the next several weeks, you will see Piglet Paper begin to migrate back to its original roots, especially as prime motorcycling season lies in wait. Yes, we plan on riding ALOT this year! So we will have plenty of travel-logs and interesting things along the way to share with you!

You will also start to see changes to some the posts currently on Piglet Paper. We will be migrating some of these to Beatnik Biker and Life Wonderments, but we will leave you note every time we do.

Of course, once you check out Beatnik Biker and Life Wonderments, if you like what you see, you can always subscribe to those blogs, too!

Therapy of the Open Road

Be sure to pick up your copy of Good Times Magazine, The Arts & Entertainment Guide for West Texas. They have a calendar of events that’s one of the best I’ve seen around these parts. It includes all kinds of info about cool events around the State, everything from music to comedy and everything in between. And, it’s free!

But, of course, the coolest part is the Rubber Side Down column that Ronn and I author monthly. :) You can click here to read our column in the Feb issue or you can pick up your own copy and read all the other cool stuff, too. See Short Ride, Take it Easy for a quick list of where you can get one.

Short Ride, Take it Easy

Monday, January 29th, 2007

If you missed the January issue of Good Times Magazine, check out our Rubber Side Down article Short Ride, Take it Easy. We have a regular column that appears monthly.

You can pick up an issue at the beginning of the month in a variety of places around town including Barnes & Noble, Hastings, Buffalo Wild Wings, Jason’s Deli, The Hemingway, Swensen’s, IHOP, Murray’s Deli, Strawberry Fields, Chili’s, Abuelo’s, The Garlic Press, Dos Amigos, and Blockbuster-just to name a few.

Reason to Celebrate

Monday, January 29th, 2007

You hear about someone that “He’s a legend in his own mind” and you think in your mind “He doesn’t have a clue”.  So admittedly, we suspect we really don’t have a clue, but in our minds we have reason to celebrate.

This very post you are reading is our 100th post!  Yippee!!!!  For a couple of kids who, most of the time, don’t know their head from a hole in the ground and certainly didn’t have any concept of how big the blogosphere really is when we started this blogging adventure, we figure we’re doing pretty good–for us anyway.

We started this thing in May06 with the idea of blogging about motorcycling and some of that we have done.  But we have also evolved to include all kinds of other stuff.  Notice we changed our tag line to read “an eclectic mix of motorcycling, media, mania or whatever suits our fancy”, which is really just code for “we have no idea where we are going with this deal, so let’s make up something that sounds intriguing”.

None the less, while other bloggers might be posting 3-4 times a day, we figure 100 posts in 9 months is good for us and sufficient reason to celebrate.  And who better to celebrate with than our faithful an loyal readers who gave us a reason to keep on blogging in the first place.

I guess really what we have learned from this deal is that blogging is like most other things in life. If you just put yourself out there instead of trying to make it perfect first, you get alot further and discover some unexpected gifts along the way.  In short, just start and let the creative process take you wherever you are supposed to go.  It’s more fun that way.

Aside from celebrating our 100th post here at PigletPaper, we also have other news to share.  Ronn has learned that his style is the nifty tips, tricks and cool stuff that he finds, so he is now authoring another blog called BeatnikBiker.  Lisa, on the other hand, has learned her niche is the philosophical, life analogy kind of posts, so she is authoring another blog site called LifeWonderments.  As the creative process has led us to branch out, PigletPaper will continue to evolve.  We don’t know how or when, we just know we like it and we are keeping it.

And finally, we decided that we are really glad life is a process and not an event.  If it weren’t, we wouldn’t get the opportunity to open so many presents that life delivers to our doorstep, sometimes in ugly wrapping paper, but always one day at a time.
